Opuntia humifusa / Prickly Pear Cactus


Our only native cactus in New Jersey, Prickly Pear sprawls down dry bluffs and across sandy shores. The blooms are exquisite – large and yellow/orange, followed by persistent red fruit. Spreads over time.

Evergreen. In winter, the cactus pad recline as protection against frost. In warmer temperatures, the pads rehydrate and resume growth.
