A brilliantly scarlet wildflower, co-evolved with hummingbirds for pollination. Also sought out by butterflies. Evolved for life in streambeds and swamps but makes a fine garden perennial under most conditions. Vivid floral spikes bloom for an extended period of time in mid-summer. Less preferred by deer but sometimes browsed.
