Lobelia cardinalis / Cardinal flower


A brilliantly scarlet wildflower, co-evolved with hummingbird pollinators and also sought out by butterflies. Evolved for life in streambeds and swamps but makes a fine garden perennial under most conditions. Its vivid floral spikes bloom for an extended period of time in mid-summer. Less preferred by deer but sometimes browsed.
